Sociology Roundtable: The Performances of the Family
The family, to me, holds great meaning when talking about sociology. The first of these is the child's behavior and influences. This is the child’s main source of interaction a large piece of his/her life is the family. Therefore the family will teach him/her all about their traditions, emotional connections and social identity. One other huge thing the family decides, unwillingly, for the child is their social identity. This all depends on what kind of family the child is born into, this has to do with social class, the hierarchy of races which in turn can relate to the child's opportunities throughout their life. Now, although through media, particularly T.V. shows, the family is perceived as a happy and cooperative unit. While the already listed remain true, the family isn’t family and the perfect family doesn’t exist. The family, as I know it, yells, screams and even in some cases can be violent. This can lead to unwanted traits in a child when he/she is older.
Other than this the family also provides the basic needs for the child such as, water, clothes, food, shelter and comfort. Due to this the child constantly looks up to the parents and/or older siblings for guidance and help. An example of this in my life would be the simple task of making dinner when my parents are out at some function. Another thing the child will grow up learning is what whatever or however the parents act. This could mean anything from manors to personal traits that without knowing, the child can develop. In some instances this could be great in others, not so much. A child’s future is largely dependent on the parent’s social identity. It can have a great effect, once again, on how the child is brought up, the different lessons they learn. This can also affect the later life work of the kid depending on the wealth and past of the family.
