Media has a very big influence on body image. Media has led younger adults into developing eating disorders. It is more typical for a woman to have an eating disorder over a man. This is mainly due to the fact of how women are portrayed on television. Women on television are portrayed as really skinny and beautiful. Watching these women on television, many girls might think that they need to be skinny which will make them beautiful. This leads to girls developing anorexia. For someone who is anorexic, their main focus is losing weight, this drives them to eat small meals and maybe not eat at all. If one were to weigh themselves and they didn’t like it, this could affect their entire day. These are some of the symptoms and side effects that can occur when someone has anorexia.(Mascarelli).
A researcher named Anna Becker was very interested in eating
disorders. She did her research around the occurrences of eating disorders
around the world, and where they were the most and least frequent. She found
out that Fiji had the least amount of anorexics until around 1995. This was
because Fiji only had a slight amount of exposure to media and television. The
year of 1995 was when Fiji began to watch western television shows and media.
This is when things started to become worse for the female youth of Fiji. Many
female teens started to purposely throw up to lose weight. Becker began doing
surveys throughout the years that Fiji had been exposed to western media. The
amount of girls who started to purposely vomit, went up an extraordinary amount
since the first time Becker did her first survey. In the most recent survey
Becker did, many of the teenage girls said that this western media was the
reason they were trying to change their body image. This shows how media is
affecting teenagers lives in a horrible and detrimental way (Mascarelli).
