Over eighty five million American households own a pet of some kind. Why do so many people enjoy
owning pets and what’s the psychological reasoning behind this?

Petting or interacting with animals has been proven to release endorphins and help people deal
with emotional stress. There are many studies showing that interacting with animals can help
people be more productive and happy. On the other hand, being the owner and caretaker of
animals can cause the opposite effect. The upkeep and work involved can add extra work and
stress to someone’s day yet people still love owning animals.

In conclusion, it seems that most people keep pets simply for the companionship of the animal,
