Gender in toys
Today in class we has a seminar about how in today's society Toy company's such as Hasbro and Mattel are trying to aim their toys more towards boys by using the stereotypical color pallet like blue and black in their toys and they do the same things for the girls. I personally do agree with this point, and for example we brought up the toy Nerf and talked about how their advertisements rely heavily on gender stereotypes. A good example of their stereotyping is that about five years ago Nerf unveiled their newest line of Nerf Guns, the "Nerf Rebel" This line was heavily aimed towards girls due to the color pallets of the guns, which are purple, pink and white. The commercials and media posts also showed strictly girls playing with this toy, no boys. But Nerf not only did this for the girls line on guns, ever since the creation of Nerf Guns in 1989 the only kids that have been portrayed playing with them have been boys and it took them twenty six years of making this product to come out with a girls version, but in this era of society boy don't just play with boy toys and girls don't just play with girl toys. I t has become almost impossible to label toys by boy and girl. Although yes it is hard to label the toys major company still do it because there are still places all around america and the world were if you were a boy playing with girl toys than you will get maid fun of and bullied and the same thing would happen to the girls. So that's a big reason why boys only play with boy toys and why girls only play with girl toys, cause in the end it comes down to "Do I really want to get made fun of and bullied for these choices." I am connecting this topic with The Interactionist Perspective because, The way that toy makers are are designing and selling their toys resembles them trying to figure out how individuals interpret what toy to buy and they learn to understand that certain toys are for them and other toys are not.
