Election Issue

Traffic/Public Transport/Walkability/Urban Sprawl

Houston is one of the most diverse cities in the country and the fourth most populous. There are many surrounding cities in the Houston metropolitan area. Many people head downtown or other areas in central Houston at the same time usually following the same commute to work everyday. This causes a lot of traffic issues around the time that most 9 to 5 jobs start and end. A large number of suburban residents work in central Houston because there is an uneven ratio between the occupation and housing location. About 8,000 residential units and there are more than 144,000 jobs.

With such a distance between their home and destination most people would drive if they had the choice, especially because there usually isn't a form of public transport with a route that connects the two points effectively and walking is out of the question. There is a light rail, but it's only within the downtown area. The buses are scheduled to arrive at stops about every fifteen minutes, but there is no way of knowing exactly when they will arrive. So having a personal vehicle is preferred to having to rely on someone else. So the sidewalks never get fixed because not many people want to walk so it's not a priority.
