Immigration and Refugee Crisis
The immigration and refugee crisis has been around for a very long time. A refugee is a person that is forced out of their country due to natural disaster, war, or persecution, to take refuge in another country. An immigrant is someone who travels to a different country to live there. People who immigrated to the U.S., initially went for the religious and economic freedom. People are still doing this today. Although there is one big issue in the U.S. This issue is whether every immigrant and refugee should be allowed into the U.S. This issue has been going on for many years. In response to this many years ago, President Clinton signed a law that allowed green cards and visas. A visa allows an immigrant to enter the U.S. and stay there for a certain period of time. A green card can be harder to obtain, because a green card allows an immigrant who is already in the U.S. to stay there forever if one wanted to. If one had a green card, they would need to get it renewed every few years.
Both these crises have a lot to do with elected officials. Some officials want sterner policies on refugees and immigrants, while others might want more lenient policies. For example, Beto and Ted Cruz have different views on immigration. Beto believes that illegal immigrants should have equal rights. He also wants to pass the "Dream Act." This is where all illegal kid immigrants in the U.S. would be granted a citizenship. Ted Cruz on the other hand, wants to strengthen border control. He also doesn't want to let every immigrant in without them having the proper documentation. This shows the different views that people have on this issue which hopefully can be resolved once and for all.
