Why people wear makeup

How does makeup play a role in sociology? According to a study done at sephora makeup is vital to “doing a gender” as they said. What they mean by “doing a gender” is Using an item that is known for being more feminine, masculine, etc. Makeup is the idol for the “feminine standard” because if you go back to its roots it’s supposed to be an enhancer for natural features or some sort of beautifier which is considered by society’s stereotype to be more of a “girl’s thing”. Nowadays the lines are blurred a little when it comes to guys can wear makeup too, recently society is becoming more accepting of who we all are as individuals as I said makeup shouldn’t be limited to just girls. On the other hand makeup has recently become less of an enhancer and more of an art in a way such as when someone goes into sephora and shows someone who works there a picture from Instagram and asks what products they would need to recreate that look. This could go both ways like one you need to be happy with who you are or makeup is an art field go for it. After reading the article I started thinking about how a lot of mascara now is like “this will make you look like you’re wearing falsies” when it used to be “these false lashes look natural no one will know their fake”, which I saw a change in beauty standard going from “no one will know you’re wearing makeup” to “everyone will think you’re lashes are fake but they’re not”. People are becoming more accepting of the fact not everyone wakes up beautiful for some people makeup is a necessity for looking presentable, which I also found interesting in the article that I read; so makeup typically takes effort to put on so it’s associated with effort and according to a study people who wear makeup regularly tend to wear less makeup when they’re depressed because of a lack of energy
