Like most other people, my political views were influenced by my parents when I was very young. My mother is a Democrat and my father is kind of neutral with most political things so I am more left-leaning. Also coming from an educated middle-class family, we are very open to a lot of things and different views. Even though my parents didn't actively tell me about news or politics, I asked a lot of questions about different politicians I had heard about from watching the news on TV. I first started getting into politics at around 1st grade before the 2008 presidential elections. We had a vote across the whole school so I had asked my parents questions about the candidates. Even though I liked politics, I didn't really know much about how the world ran and about many of our domestic issues and international issues. I think I started to be aware of these things when I came to Post Oak in 4th grade and participated in MMUN. During this time I was exposed to not only my topic but the other topics that older students were covering. I would say that I wasn't really influenced by my peers but informed about current events. However, in the past few years, after being around very liberal people and very conservative people at my old school, I have started to see where the issues lie on both sides and have associated myself to be more towards the middle of the spectrum but agreeing with more of the liberal viewpoints. I believe my viewpoints were mostly affected by my parents but also from the places I lived in. For a while, I considered myself very liberal. However, after living in the Pacific Northwest for two years and being around a lot of far-left people, I realized that I still did not really fit in with a lot of their more extreme views. On the other hand, where I live now, out in Clear Lake, most of the community is very conservative. This is why I think that location but mostly the people that live in your area have a huge impact on your political views. Some people may get turned off by certain political views if they are surrounded by the far left or far right. For me, it was kind of both. I also have gained a lot of political opinions through school by talking about new issues and hearing different perspectives from people. Because we are at a record high for the divide between our political parties in the U.S., I believe it is important to listen to as many perspectives as we can. You don't have to agree with everyone else but we need to stop denouncing each other's opinions because someone is a democrat or republican.
