Where Voting Matters - Cuba
Cuba has undergone a drastic change. For the first time in 60 years, Cuba will not be occupied by a member of the Castro family. Over 8 million citizens voted for the new president. Raul Castro has been the countries president since 2008. He announced in 2013 that this will be his last 5- year term as Cuba's president. The new president was to be chosen in April. Vice President Miguel Díaz-Canel is one of the favorites for the job according to Cubans. People will cast their votes for one of the 612 members of the National Assembly of People's Power. The Assembly members will be elected for 5 - year terms. Vice President Miguel Díaz-Canel was elected as president. Cuba's economy is struggling, because of Raul Castro. Although, there will be a significant change in the economy because of the new president. Cubans are not expecting anything to happen immediately.
Miguel Díaz-Canel wants to change the economy, but there are many obstacles that come with this task. If he changes too much too soon, he will alienate Communist Party conservatives. If he goes too slow, he will anger citizens. If Miguel Díaz-Canel can make changes for the better, he will be a success. If he does not, he will become a target for the impatient citizens eagerly waiting for change.
