Where Voting Matters
Jack Gross
The freedom to vote was one of the biggest founding principles that shaped our country on its path to get
to how it is today. The idea of having everyone be able to vote, was one of the big reasons that America
broke off in the first place. However, even though the idea of giving everyone the right to vote, was such
a central part of the foundation of this country, often people don’t use it. A common problem that occurs
during elections is the ideas that people get, thinking that their votes don’t matter. This is a huge problem
because many people just don’t vote because of this, and it’s not just a few people, often thousands
and thousands of people don’t show up to vote which can dramatically change the results of elections.

In the United States we have some very important elections coming up soon, and in all likelihood many
people will not show up to show their support for their favored candidate. The elections that will take
place soon will have a huge impact on the lives of Americans, and yet many of them will not show any
support. There are tons of big issues that will be impacted by this. Including but not limited to,
gun control, education (tuition), creating jobs, Minimum Wage laws, and Immigration. These are quite
broad issues and will affect the lives of many citizens, and still (some statistics say) 40% of eligible
voters will vote in the midterm elections. Millennials made up around 31% of eligible voters, but they
made up only 19% of actual votes that were cast. (In the 2012 Election). However, this election has
the potential to be different, as almost all millennials now have the ability to vote leading to them
having a much bigger potential to sway the vote. However, there is no way to tell how many of them
actually will vote because since the last election many people have talked about why everyone should
vote. I can not in confidence say what will happen, but I can assure you this, I, along with many
others, eagerly await the results of this year’s Elections.
