Interests

So far in Guns Germs and Steel, It has interested me how much more advanced Eurasia was than Australia. They had different stone tools, and more advanced tools for hunting and gathering food and such. They were also very advanced in general. Another thing that interested me was what the author says about the different continents axes and how those play a roll in the different societies.

Most people think that kids have it easy, as they haven't yet had to grow up and experience "the cruel grasp of society," or that children live freely without having to follow any sort of social constructs. Though this may seem true at first glance, it takes as little as stepping into a toy store to know this is not true. Upon entry, one will likely immediately notice rows of pink and blue toys. Perjhing Mardani  10/1/18 IHSS Blog  Kids have been being gender-rolled for ages now. They are pressured to be like the other children at school, our younger generations are struggling and are being isolated in our stereotyped society. From toys, to clothes, to personalities, kids can not find themselves. Pressured to be like the other girls and boys, they erase their true personalities most of the time. If you are a girl, you have to play with barbies, and american girl dolls.  If you are a boy you have to play with legos, and nerf guns. Why can't there be a balance between the two? Op-ed Toy Refelction - Emily Wilburn

Today in seminar, we discussed how toys are being marketed and the gender stereotypes around them. We talked about how companies showed advertisements with boys and girls playing together whether it be a science kit or a kitchen set in the past, but now they're more divided. Nerf designed a play gun that was pink and covered in flowers that are considered the 'girly' version, what this did is add more separation, it did not make the toy itself more inclusive. Something that came up that I found very interesting was this idea that a girl can play with a boys toy and be considered 'cool' or a 'tomboy' but the second a boy picks up a toy that is designed for girls he considered not manly enough. Why do we all have this common concept in mind? Is it because this is how we see the toys and items advertised? Is it what we tell ourselves because our bodies are built differently?
