The Federal Government's New Report on Climate Change
The federal government just released a new report on climate change, which they do every 4 years. This report on climate change is actually a good one, and shows that the government might put more of a focus on regulating factories and industries, instead of just ignoring the issue completely. The report stated that climate change and the risks of future disasters “could pose a profound threat to Americans’ well-being.” The main issues it talked about were wildfires and floods. The report cited the previous 2014 findings, which stated that the West was at a much greater risk for wildfires because of rising temperatures, which we all know is the case, considering the incredible amount of wildfires that California has been hit with. It also brought confirmed predictions that had been made in previous studies, many to do with flooding. The report talked about how high tide flooding has been posing daily risks to many coastal cities and neighborhoods, whether it be peoples houses, businesses, forms of transportation, or ecosystems. Finally the report talked about climate change around the world, and in the military. The military has been worried about climate change for a long time now, because of the chance that it could cause political instability in other countries, if poorer countries are affected with environmental disasters that they cannot recover from. This is a very concerning thought, and one that the report makes sure is known.
My thoughts about this report are generally positive, because I think that it’s very good that the government is finally addressing the issue of climate change. But there is one particular concern, the fact that the president doesn’t believe his own governments report. Donald Trump, when asked by reporters, stated that he doesn’t believe that humans have affected the climate at all, despite many scientific studies. When asked why he didn’t believe the report, he said that it was because his gut told him it was fake. I’m not sure how high I can be on this report if the leader of our country won’t support any scientific proof this is an issue. I really hope that the government can begin the fight against climate change without his support, but I’m worried about the man with Veto power.
