Where Voting Matters- Madagascar
A power that citizens of different locations from around the world tend to take for granted is the ability to vote. Though one might think their vote doesn't help in the midsts of everyone else’s, there have many locations and situations in which that has been proven wrong, and a few votes could change the course of an entire country. One example in which this premise proves itself true was during the midterm elections of the country of Madagascar. The country of Madagascar was at a crossroads, as it’s ruler, President Hery Rajaonarimampianina had held his position since 2014. Though this is not an unusual length for one to hold their position as president, Rajaonarimampianina had refused to change his styles of ruling, and didn’t comply to the changing times around him. Despite suggestions from other political officials and the country’s citizens, the political systems and laws of Madagascar remained the same way they had during the year 2009.
After Rajaonarimampianina proceeded to reject new laws created by the parliament, protests became a constant practice amongst the citizens of Madagascar. After a multitude of lengthy legal battles, the executive decision that Rajaonarimampianina was to be demoted to a more inclusive government position that permitted representation from the parliament. Things began to improve for the government of Madagascar during June of 2018, when an extremely well-liked and popular man by the name of Christian Ntsay was given the position of prime minister. Even though he was appointed, there was still unrest amongst the citizens and the parliament about the still selective and non inclusive state of the government.
The election transpiring in Madagascar is an extremely risky process, as the already endangered economy of the poor country is drained during the election process and the candidate’s campaign. This election is extremely crucial for the people of Madagascar, as the already jeopardized economy will be put in the hands of the election winner. As well as it’s vulnerable economical position, Madagascar is also extremely unprepared for any form of conflict, from natural disasters to disputes with neighboring countries. Every vote matters during this election to ensure safety, security, and a more auspicious future for the country and people of Madagascar.
