Optimistic Future
I was extremely surprised to see a lot of these statistics and I was shocked to see all of the things that are going well in the world. I believe that in today’s society, we are constantly consuming news which mostly talks about bad events happening around the world which is one of the reasons we don’t hear about these good statistics. I read an article from BBC which talked about how although we claim we want to watch “good news” we really don’t. In short, they did an experiment that showed that when people were given the choice to read any article they wanted, they leaned towards reading negative ones about problems rather than happy stories. I was not surprised by this because I believe that news stations know that controversy draws viewers in and now, due to all of the coverage of negative news, we naturally drift towards it. While I do not have any evidence to back it up, I believe that in an era in which the President is seen as a controversial figure by many, more people are tuning in to hear what he has done. It feels like everyday there is something controversial going on whether it’s a shooting, a statement made by a politician, or any other event that could be deemed as controversial. News stations cover these events within hours or even minutes due to their controversy while positive news doesn’t see the light of day. There’s so much negativity being covered right now to the point where I believe it’s very difficult to hear about positive things going on in our society such as the lowered teen birth, or the steady down-trend in homicide rate.
Another thing I wanted to discuss was the fact that despite there being a lot of good being done at the moment, there are still many problems. One that I believe is not talked about enough is the suicide rate. It has been steadily rising for the past decade and for some of the statistics shown in the article, there are other problems that come with them. For example, smoking has decreased dramatically over the past few decades. While that number has increased though, there is a huge market developing for Juuls and other products that can replace cigarettes. Could smokers being moving over to Juuls as a replacement? While there are a number of issues being solved at the moment, there are also many more arising.
