Narconomics

This article brought up issues related to drug cartels, and some background information to how they work. Tom Wainwright, the author of this excerpt, did research on drug cartels, and realized how similar they run to big franchises. These cartels have private relationships with the growers and suppliers of cocaine, for example, and they are able to communicate with them, to be able to price what they are then reselling, based on market costs. One of the solutions Wainwright brought up was implementing some sort of legalization over some of these drugs, instead of complete elimination. He explained how unreasonable and pointless that would be, since the drugs would be coming in and out anyways.
I thought this article was really interesting important to the study of economics since these drug cartels bring in a lot of money, and run like a real business. But, drugs are very illegal. Almost a third of those convicted of a crime are of relation to drugs. Since drugs carry a high risk factor, the prices are quite high. So the question posed is where does all that money go? Well, our government is spending almost a trillion dollars trying to stop the use and trading of drugs. Not to mention the wall our president is trying to erect could almost double that cost. There's so many better things we could use that money for. That caused me to wonder how that affects us as a country. There's so many better things we could use that money for. I was wondering where the correlation between the money being spent to prevent the drugs from coming in and the money the drugs are sold and bought for. The solution this article seemed to propose was the legalization of some of the less harmful drugs. Which caused me to think the money drugs are bringing in could be used for good if they are sold in a controlled environment. For example, the states that have legalized marijuana have dispensaries with strict restrictions. This made me think by the government taking over the selling by legalizing some of the less harmful drugs, they can control where that money goes, and use it for some of the more pressing problems our country is presented with.
