Abortion: Civil Right???

Abortion is one of the most polarizing problems and it is an extremely sensitive topic. For the past two decades, the amount of abortions has been dropping in the United States, despite this it remains a hot topic. There are multiple stances on abortion but there are two main ones. Pro-Choice believe that women should have the right to an abortion and while some are in favor of third trimester abortions, I believe the majority believe that they should have the right to an abortion at least during the first trimester. The Pro-Life side believes that abortion is wrong because they believe that abortions are killing babies. While some Pro-Life advocates believe there should be no exceptions in the case of an abortion, the majority believe that it shouldn't be allowed unless it could cause serious health problems for the mother, or if the woman has been raped.
Recently, in New York, they made it legal to get an abortion past 24 weeks which has caused a lot of controversy. Many believe that this is downright wrong but the main goal of the bill is to make it legal for late-term abortions in which the fetus could cause serious health complications for the mother. While I think it is an important bill, I believe it's more important that we focus on the majority of abortions as very few take place after 13 weeks (the first trimester). Around 9-10% of abortions happen after the first trimester.
While the survey is pretty dated, in 2004 an anonymous survey was sent to women who had abortions to find out the reasoning for them getting abortions. Less than 8% of the abortions were performed due to health complications and rape while the overwhelming majority of abortions were performed because the mother didn't want or could not afford a baby. Pro-Life don't believe that those are valid reasons to get abortions.
I believe that the whole argument around abortion is based on whether the fetus is a living human or not. The main problem with this is that there is not a clear definition of life. This is why it is so difficult for people to all come to an agreement on abortion, a lot of it has to do with how you interpret life. Personally, I am Pro-Life but I'm very open to hear the other side. I would switch my views on abortion if I could be shown that while the baby is being developed it is not a living being.
