Civil Rights - Age-Restricted Communities

Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968, the Fair Housing Act prohibits age discrimination in housing. This means that housing should be provided to people over 55. The houses should include easy accesabilities such as wide door frames for wheelchairs, handles, and ramps. This is so elders can live comfortably in their environments. Although, the Housing for Older Americans Act of 1995 eliminated this requirement. This meant that communities were being built targeted towards middle aged people. They were more interested in commodities such as pools and golf courses, instead of requirements they will need when they become older. Elders were being discriminated against greatly. Developers began to eliminate requirements for the elderly and handicapped. Developers were no longer building wheelchair accessible door ways, they built more stairs, and obstacles around the communities. Public transportation was also not accessible near the communities. This was refusing the right to allow elders to live in these communities. I think that this is absolutely terrible and inhumane. Elders should be allowed the same comfort as younger generations. If I was an architect, I would make sure the environment would allow for elderly people as well.
