Women's Rights in Saudi Arabia
Women's Rights in Saudi Arabia has been a disputed topic for a very long time, their legal system is very harsh and restrictive against a lot of groups of people including LGBT groups and women. This system implements laws that are very restraining against women from doing things that they should be able to on their own such as they must obtain permission from a male (father, husband, brother, son) to do things like get a passport, travel and sometimes even access to healthcare. Saudi Government passed a law for any sexual harassment reported to be fined by up to 2 years in jail or 100,000 riyals. The problem with this was that if anything was found to be wrongly reported or a fake accusation then the "victim" would be punished the same as the alleged assailant. This opened a door for Saudi officials to still take advantage of the legal system because all that had to happen was for them to not believe the women who claim sexual harassment, this made people also afraid to speak up. The closest steps that have been taken toward change in Saudi Arabia include a UN committee trying to compel the Saudi Government about adopting a law abolishing the guardianship law (the law forcing women to obtain permission for things) as well as an anti-discrimination law. Another thing that happened is about a year ago women finally obtained the right to obtain drivers licenses and then a month later the right to drive.
