Supreme Court to Rule Whether or Not LGBTQ Workers are Protected Under Title VII
On April 22nd, 2019, the Supreme Court gathered to determine whether or not gay and transgender worker rights are protected by the anti-discrimination laws that protect employees from unjustified actions. These laws prevent employees from being fired, held back from promotions, and other work-related issues on account of their race, sex, color, religion or national origin. There have been cases of sexual orientation discrimination, which have voted in the employee’s favor, seeing as sexual orientation can be seen as a factor of sex, but activists say that that is not enough. Having a law that directly states no worker bias against LGBTQ workers would further prevent cases like Aimee Stephens, a transgender woman who worked at Garden City funeral home, who was fired after she she told them of her transition. The Supreme Court took her case on April 22nd, 2019, to decide whether or not it was a wrongful termination. They were to rule on Monday, but since then there has been no update on the case.
