Thoughts of Engagement
The problem that I chose to focus on is homelessness/poverty in the Houston area. This a big problem in Houston as there are so many people that are suffering from homelessness and have no idea of how to get out it. Everywhere people are sitting on the streets, going from shelter to shelter, and scrounging up any food they can get their hands on. Now, this is where my plan of action comes into play for helping the homeless. My idea was to help educate the homeless on necessary things depending on their level of education and how much they already know. Once this is done, the next step would be trying to find a job interview for that person so they could have a stable income. Although an important part about going to a job interview is to make sure that the person is properly dressed. This means having tidy clothes and to overall be cleaned up. People suffering from homelessness might not have the money for new clothes or have a place to shower. A person interviewing another for a job doesn't want someone that is dirty or unclean as this leads to a bad first impression. Now after a person has clean clothes and an education that is sufficient for the job they might get, then this person will hopefully be able to get a job interview. If all goes well, this person who was once suffering from homelessness will be able to have a job that makes them money. If for any reason this person does not get the job, then they can apply for another one as there are tons of job openings throughout Houston.
Although, doing all of this on my own might be a little much. This is why I have researched a bunch of organizations that are helping the homeless get jobs such as The Salvation Army, Goodwill, Church Missions, and much more. I would hopefully try to contact these organizations and then ask if I might be able to volunteer there. If they said, "yes,"I would get to go to this organization and hear about the job process for the homeless that go to these organizations. Not just that, but I could possibly even help with the activities they do to prepare the homeless for jobs. For example, at the Beacon (A place that provides services to the homeless), I could volunteer with helping to wash peoples clothes so that they can look presentable for a job interview. I could also help at Church Missions to help educate the homeless. There are a bunch of opportunities that would allow me to assist people suffering from homelessness. Overall, going to volunteer would give me the chance to learn more about the homeless issue in the Houston area and for me personally to help this problem.
