Action Plan - Prison Reform

I feel I confidently understand the topic of prison reform and the many issues and solutions it has. The reformation of prisons is a task that is not new to the United States or the greater part of the world. My challenge project covers a good sum of that history as well as the failers in our modern society to adapt and apply new idea’s. For the solution part of this topic, there are many approaches. Low-risk/minor offense criminals is a large focus of my project and my solution. Somewhere I want to start is with alternative punishment for minor offense criminals which consist of probation, restitution, community service, and/or rehabilitative service. Just these few methods statistically prove more effective and would greatly benefit prisons and the U.S. Sadly these changes refer more towards sentencing reform in which my group members and I alone would have a very hard time impacting. I believe a large part of the solution is educating the many who are uninformed, hopefully resulting in actions to help get reformations. A reformation that is feasible on a prison by prison basis would be to help improve in prison education as well as post-prison opportunity. But, after collaborating with my fellow group members Sayer and Ren we have pushed our solution in the direction of getting contact with parole officers and their representatives from the Harris County Dept. of Justice and possibly present our cumulative information and or interview them and learn more about the process. In general, we would like to be in contact with someone who is involved in the system. A contact that Ren has connections to is Sheriff Ed Gonzales of Harris County and so we may be able to interview him about his views on prison reform.
