Thoughts on Engagement
Not much consideration or thought has been given to the lack of enforcement towards service dog laws.
Many people don’t know what a service dog is, what work they can provide or their importance to the people who
rely on them. People are also unaware of how service dogs should behave when in public and the dangers that
out of control pets can pose to working dog teams. Because of this, I think the biggest change I could make for
the cause is by raising awareness.

I have already created an Instagram page (@love.affinity) to document my process as I work to train my own
service dog. This includes all the good and the bad. I have first hand experience when it comes to raising and
training a prospective puppy and now that she has started some public access, I’m learning more and more what
I’ll have to deal with as a service dog handler. This includes access issues, constant questioning (usually well
intentioned) and loose pets. Handlers would face less of these issues if the laws were more publicly addressed
and well known.

On top of keeping my public page for others to follow, I could also work on making posters that display the
differences between service dogs, therapy dogs and emotional support animals. I do think changes to the laws
need to be made. The service animal laws were created to make it as easy as possible for disabled individuals
to get around but unfortunately to keep it this way, it’s a trust based system and people abuse it. I think there
could still be a way to make it easy for disabled individuals to get around and experience less issues. Before any
dog (or horse) is given public access, I think they should be taken through an intensive temperament test by a
professional trainer. Once the animal passes the test and the handler gets a note from their physician or
psychiatrist prescribing the need for an animal helper, they should be given special identification (so they don’t
have to be approached) and allowed access as a team. While this would be a difficult law to pass, it would cut
down significantly on the increasing number of fakes in the United States.
