Dixie School District Votes to Change Name
In California a school district decided to chang their name after being accused of promoting Confederancy and slavery because of it. In the wealthy area of California there was debate about whether or not to change the name of the 150 year old school district, but eventually it was decided to change the name of one of the elementary schools, but no name was decided on. There still has not been a decision on what to name the school despite more than twenty suggestions from large groups of people and the school board. There is an estimated $37,000 cost to be able to change all of the textbooks and everything else that goes along with changing the name of this school. Although many people agree it is expensive, they also said it was a necessary cost to change the name to something that promoted the community better, and was not a meaning "bound up in racism." Although this school was a change, the major change was of the entire school district. There were petitions of what to change the name to in order to promote a better image of the community that was not so negative.
This is not the first time changes like this have gone on to school names, sports teams names have also been changed because of a negative connotation to slavery, confederancy, or other ideas of racism. I think that this is a step in the right direction. People realizing that something that could easily be disregarded to one person, could have a very negative meaning to a different person. Although changing the names of school or school districts can be costly, to many people they will be a change that are worth the cause because of how it will make the community look better, but also make people feel better about the place they are living, working, or going to school. I have heard about issues that are similar to this, about the chaning of school names or other places. This particular instance has only been in one article I could find, and seems to just be bringing awarness to problems like these and what is being done about them. Although it seems like a small start right now, awarness is one of the most important ways to start fixing a problem by having people learn about it, learn that it is a problem that exists. Because of this people are able to start making changes on a small scale, but with more work and more changes like this, it will lead to a more significant impact over time.
