Facebook Steps Up

Facebook has announced a ban on content that includes “praise, support and representation of white nationalism and separatism” This is a significant policy change after months of criticism. The ban will focus on explicit language but will not target the more implicit statements supporting the white nationalism and separatism. Still civil rights groups want Facebook to work harder to eliminate racism as a whole on its platform,  and they say the new policy is a crucial first step. Facebook will also begin to direct users who try to post this content to Life After Hate, an organization that helps people leave hate groups. Although this is a major step to eradicating racism of such a big social hub that is Facebook, they are still not doing enough. To break this down a bit Facebook makes money off of all the advertisement on Facebook, so this a big reason why they have been so slow to make this ban, because they know that as a result of this ban they will lose money. However after Facebook dealt with some lawsuits they promised to changes it's advertising tools to limit the ability of some groups to target people based on race, gender, age, and other categories.
