The Legendary Chili

Over 50 years ago, a chili spill almost caused a riot, at a very unfortunate time. The year was 1967 and integration had begun just a few months earlier. It was at Little Rock High School that the riots and protesting reached an all time high. The government called in the national guard to attempt to block the students from entering, but the president pulled an outstanding move and called in the 101 airborne division to escort the students in. Once the riots died down outside the school, inside the harassment began. The black student's school lives were not good and often distracting. Minnijean Brown Trickey, one of the students, was walking down the school cafeteria isle, when she dropped here chili. The victim of the drop was Dent Gitchel, a junior. She claimed it was "Accidentally on purpose", which is an interesting and kind of makes no sense. She was suspended for two days, but months later she left and finished school in New York. Looking back on the incident, she says it was a good learning experience. She recalled, "She could not be perfect, even if it meant letting down the people who needed her as a civil rights symbol, and further upsetting the racists who taunted her every day"(NPR). This is directly tied into the unit we did on civil rights and the Little Rock 9. They were later reunited at a Chili cook-off.
