Huge Racial Disparities Found in Deaths Linked to Pregnancy
On Tuesday, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention reported that African-American, Native American and Alaska Native women are three times as likely to die of pregnancy-related issues than White women in the United states. This racial disparity has been going on for several years despite efforts to get better healthcare for colored women. The researchers of the study also concluded that sixty percent of the pregnancy-related deaths could be prevented with better healthcare, communication, and support- something all women deserve when going through pregnancy.
I think this is an important issue that more people should be turning their attention to. The statistics from the study are shocking and we need to work towards a solution. It is unfair to all colored women or any woman that doesn’t have access to pregnancy-related healthcare or support. Whether the mom has money to support her baby or not should not determine is she gets support for her baby- it doesn’t have to be much or anything fancy, just at least something that can ensure the health of both the mom and the baby. This issue has roots in poverty and the gap between the privilege of whites and colored. Moms who are in poverty or who was raised in poverty may not be as well informed or have access to good healthcare. This is the first time that I have heard of this issue and I am surprised I haven't heard about it more in the press.
