Is There a Connection Between Undocumented Immigrants and Crime?
This article is about how many Americans are complaining that undocumented immigrants are causing a rise in crime, when in fact its quite the opposite. Over the years there have been studies done with many immigrants, but no one has ever thought to study undocumented ones, probably because their so hard to find. Fortunately, they have finally completed a successful study about undocumented immigrants and their connections to crime rates. To me it seemed pretty obvious that undocumented immigrants would rather be peaceful in the USA, which the study proved. They looked at crime rates all over the countries in contrast with places commonly filled with undocumented immigrants. For example, Texas; the study showed that natives were the cause of more crimes than undocumented immigrants. As for many other places, the crime rate over the years has shown little to no change whenever there is an influx of immigrants, undocumented and legal. However, where there is a large population of undocumented immigrants, sometimes there has been a drop in crime rates. This is due to the fact that they aren't here looking for trouble or be caught, they are here to find new jobs, lives and families. All while diversifying our country with their culture and economic benefits. This for me, relates back to civil rights. During our civil rights studying, we talked about how white people wouldn't trust any kind of immigrant or black person. They would automatically assume the worst of a person who wasn't white; not every white person, but most did. This article reminded me of the assignment where we watched a video of a Puerto Rican man who wanted to help this white women with her kids and suitcase off the subway, but he hesitated. This is because he was afraid she would start screaming and thinking he was going to attack her, because that is the common reaction back in the late 1900s, with all the bad press immigrants and black people were receiving. Although times have changed and people are getting more open minded. Many people still see all these things on the news portraying immigrants and certain cultures and ethnicity as dangerous and hostile. This makes them wary of immigrants that look different, so it doesn't surprise me when many people are thinking, "more crime is happening and its because of those gosh darn illegal immigrants." I've heard it, not said outright, but whispered. I never thought that, because to me it seems like common sense; why would someone sneak into a country only to get caught and deported again? That's not smart or logical. If I were a undocumented immigrant with common sense, I would work my butt off to make a living and start a new life, all while staying under the radar.
