The Division of Our Current Presidency has Created
Essentially, my article discusses the topic of division in relation to race within our current political climate. The article speaks about how most (58%) Americans say that race relations in our country are bad. In addition, an astounding 56% believe that the current president has worsened these relationships. In particular, blacks feel very strongly about this issue because they believe that the issue hasn’t been taken far enough in-terms of fairness and equality. In addition to these two things the article also compares the past two presidencies as well as the two major political parties within our country. A majority believed that Obama had done more to help the issue then Trump but what stood out most to me was that the parties views on race. The white democrats (64%) are far more likely to say that the country hasn’t gone far enough in-terms of racial issues and equality whereas the white republicans (15%) believe the same. Another thing that interested me in this article was that the differences between parties were often shown in terms of whites because of the unbalance of race and ethnicity within the two parties.
One thing that stuck with me throughout the reading was a section on the political divide our current presidency has caused. In the article it talked about how nearly 65% of a survey indicated that racist views are more likely to be expressed to the general public. This stood out to me particularly because of the prominent divide that already exists between parties and races and according to this article, President Trump has worsened that. In the recent years we’ve seen many demonstrations, some of which have become quite violent one of which was Charlottesville. The Charlottesville incident happened in 2017 when a dodge charger plowed through a crowd of peaceful protesters protesting against the recent white supremacist rally in Charlottesville. Now, this is not to say that these events have not happened in the past prior to President Trump however, they do seem more frequent. Granted, this is a rather explicit example, racism on average tends to be more subtle, whether that’s in a place of work or school can depend.
Another thing that comes to mind is how the press presents issues in relation to the political climate they associate with. Being completely honest, no news or media outlet is unbiased and so when these outlets write papers or televise the current news they do it in such a way that favors one side. Networks notorious for doing so are outlets like; CNN & Fox News. Now, not only do they lean certain ways but the media has a very large impact on the general public. Being that this is the case, depending on what news outlets you associate with can determine your perspectives on many political issues. And so we are left with another way our country is divided.
