The Education Gap
Read an article on a racial issue in America from the last five years, whether it is from an American newspaper or a foreign paper looking at American issues. Briefly summarize the article information and then respond with what your evaluation as to what is going on, how it is being treated by the press, or anything else that you would like to say about it.
The Education Gap Between Whites and African Americans In the United States:
Although we have changed our laws in the years since lawful segregation, the legacy that segregation has left lives on in the present day United States. This is particularly evident in the way we regard education, and even after integration there is still a large gap that lives between the way we education white children and the way we educate African American children. Many of the differences in this lie in the qualification and quality of teachers and curriculum and the contrasts in funding that resides in our school systems. It is evident in our schools that less funds are presented to low income and minority schools. Weather it's through facility quality or spending per student, these populations are given less opportunities to succeed, furthering this gap in education leading to a wider gap of income as teenagers enter the world of adulthood. In terms of the way material is taught, qualification of teachers can mean the world. Teachers in lower income schools tend to be less qualified to teach the curriculum applicable to their field, meaning that students aren't receiving information in a way that creates understanding of a topic. A quote from my article states that, "Studies of underprepared teachers consistently find that they are less effective with students and that they have difficulty with curriculum development, classroom management, student motivation, and teaching strategies. "
I believe that all deserve a right to equal education, and that the current state of our education system has fallen into pieces over the years. I think American's have fallen into torpid mindset that we are past the time of segregation, oblivious to the fact that it is still happening right before our eyes. The wage gap still exists. Racism still exists, not just through police killings, not just through an abuse of power wielded by the criminal justice system. I think many of these problems lies in the foundation of how students are education. I believe that with education, being surrounded by adult figures who are passionate about learning, could change the way that social system is set up today.
