Thoughts On Engagement

My initial plan to combat human trafficking was to put up posters in bathrooms of any restaurant I could get permission from that has something along the lines of, ‘Are you abused and/or trafficked? Call these numbers: 555-555-5555 or 555-555-5556’. I realized that sounded a little too similar to what Sarah Powers had done last year (the ‘angel shot’ posters in bathrooms that if you ordered and ‘angel shot’ with certain sides you could ask the bartender there to 1. Call an Uber/Taxi, 2. Escort you to your car, or 3. Call the police. I’ve decided that since many people in the Houston area are unaware of the huge hub of human trafficking, I’ll put up posters around town that say things like ‘Human Trafficking Happens HERE’ with a hotline for human trafficking at the bottom.

I’ll document this by taking photos of wherever I place them. I plan to put 20-40 posters around town, focusing on the downtown area. Downtown is a popular place for human trafficking due to the large amount of bars and entertainment areas, especially during events like Rocket or Astros game. The Super Bowl was a huge event for human trafficking in Houston, with warnings being posted all over Facebook, Instagram and Twitter for people traveling into Houston for the Super Bowl.

I tried to strive for an original idea while also keeping on topic. Although it isn’t much, it’ll be just enough to raise awareness about the issue while simultaneously assisting those who are being threatened by the weighted shadows of human trafficking.
