Why is Juul so Popular With Teenagers?
In the last few years vaping and e-cigarettes have seen a rise in popularity with teenagers and young adults all because the company Juul. As of late, Juul has been under fire for the way that they appeal to young people, effectively causing kids get nicotine addictions. I wanted to know what Juul does to appeal to teenagers, because I personally know several people who vape and I want to know how they got hooked on Juul.
In the article I read from Vox, they cite two main reasons as to why Juul seems so appealing; those reasons being their design and the way they market their product. The design of a Juul makes it look like a flash drive or some sort of tech product which young people are already familiar with. This also allows them to be hidden easily or allow people to use them inconspicuously out in the open. The way Juuls are filled and recharged is a lot simpler than most other vaporizers or e-cigarettes, making it more accessible to people just introduced to it. In my personal experience I have seen people introduce their friends to it, show them how to hit it, and then have them hitting it in under two minutes. The way that Juul markets their products is also very shady, and is marketed in a similar way to how cigarettes used to be marketed before restrictions were put in place. Instead of promoting them as tools to get a nicotine fix, their ads promote things relaxation, freedom, and sharing. This can be done because the restrictions that have been put in place for things such as cigarettes and tobacco aren't in place for vaporizers and e-cigarettes. This type of marketing is predatory, making Juuls seem like they aren't as bad as they are, which could cause teenagers to be more attracted to them, causing them to develop nicotine addictions, which can cause a whole plethora or problems.
Because an increasing number of teenagers are getting into vaping because of Juul, we are seeing it as more acceptable because most of us know somebody who vapes. As a result people might be more inclined to try it out because their friends already do it and then they will get addicted and the cycle continues. I think sociology is a good way to study why Juul is popular, because I feel the way it got popular with my age group is from purely social reasons such as wanting to look cool or wanting to fit in.
