Thoughts of Engagement

Learning about my topic, childhood trauma was extremely informing and eye-opening. After learning about it, I was so inspired to do something about it and that is why one of my goals in taking action is to inspire others to want to make a difference. While researching my topic, childhood trauma, I came in contact with Shawn Nemith who is the founder and CEO of the Chester Street Foundation- an organization that brings awareness to childhood trauma so that children can receive the treatment they deserve. Shawn is also a survivor of childhood trauma and has a lot of insight into the long term effects of childhood trauma. The first step I took in taking action was to attend TraumaTALKs given by Shawn and some experts on childhood trauma. These gave me more information on the subject for my next step, hosting one of these TraumaTALKs. I will be hosting this TraumaTALK on May 9, 2019, and Shawn will come and speak about a mix of his personal story of childhood trauma and the facts of it such as the short/long term effects and the science behind it. This is a great way for me to spread awareness of the issue on a smaller scale. I will invite all of the teachers at Post Oak HS to attend the event and possibly any students who are interested. If the Chester Street Foundation is also in need of help, I can possibly volunteer with them. Additionally, I will speak with professionals on the topic to see how students, caregivers, and teachers can be trauma-informed- and what it means to be trauma-informed. Later, I might talk with Ms. Pilisi about what students can do if they are victims of childhood trauma or if they know someone who is a victim of trauma. This is something that can possibly be brought up in advisory.
