Thoughts on Engagement
In my paper, I wrote a lot about how one of the reasons the budget is wanted to be cut is because people believe the parks are not as well utilized, especially by the younger generations. Because of this, I think I want to base my solutions around getting our generation more aware and more involved in the national parks. The parks are trying to do this already with their Junior Ranger program, but this is more specifically geared towards very young children, the teenagers are the ones who are disinterested in the parks. One idea I plan on doing is simply making pamphlets or brochures to print out, hand out, and email to people that show a list of top national parks, most popular and the ones closest to Houston and Texas in general. It would show different parks that are easily accessible and recommended ones by people. This would include pictures and little notes about each of the parks and would probably also talk a little about what the National parks are and why they are important. I would also mention National Historic Sites, National Monuments, National Forests, etc. All places taken care of by the National Park Service. Another way to promote the parks, especially to teenagers would be through social media. SpecificaInstagramgram where people might see pictures of parks, or if I could find a way to get famous people to promote the parks. I am working on figuring out how to get into contact with people who have a big instagram following so they can post things about the parks, or of them in the parks to make them more appealing to the teenage generation. If people see on Instagram, or anywhere else, people they look up to enjoying themselves in the parks this will probably lead to them being more inclined to try to visit them. These are two ways that I think I could gradually get more people to become aware of the parks with so they would be more interested in going.
