Thoughts on Engagement
I really like the idea of using a video to communicate my ideas with representatives. I feel like this gives the students and teachers a face to their name, and can move people more than just an essay or proposal could. I also like the idea of going abroad with the people I’m interviewing, as the way the education system is run differs so vastly between states. My mom had a student when she was a high school counselor, who is a family friend of ours, and who now teaches at a school in New York. New York has one of the best funded education programs in the United States, and I’d be interested to find out why from a first hand perspective. On an NPR map, New York spent much more per student than that of the national average. I think because of that I thought that their school system was somehow different than the rest of the states. But through more research I’ve found that it’s not the case; in fact, New York has one of the most segregated school systems in the country, leading me to wonder why their spending habit per student is so different than that of the rest of the country? My goal for my engagement is to find certain source places where our education system as corrupted itself, and examine the way other countries run their systems to help me to understand what an ideal educational system would look like, and be able to communicate that to a representative.
