civil rights blog: "Education is the Civil Rights issue of Today"

While I was doing research for this blog post I came across an article titled, Education is the Civil Rights Issue of Today. I was interested in the title because of the case we have been studying this past month regarding the children of Little Rock.  The issue, in that case, is whether the schools we will integrate or not and whether those kids should be let into a school. The article focused on how we as a nation still have an extremely difficult time educating our under-served children. "On average, black students are two to three years behind their white peers academically. Almost 70 percent of black fourth graders cannot read at grade level" The article focused on raising the bar for what standard we should be teaching these children because no matter what ethnicity or race you are you should still have an equal opportunity and chance to succeed. I found the work of the organizations mentioned were truly incredible. They are making sure no matter what race you are or what neighborhood you live in that every single child has access to better education. After reading this article I now better understand the title and see how education is still such a big part of our society and needs some work.
