Final Blog: The Power of Martin Luther King Jr.
Turning Anger Into Peaceful Protesting
In this day and age, we sometimes look back at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, a man who resembles the civil rights movement and peaceful protest. However throughout his lifetime he dealt with incredible anger stemming from racism against African-Americans. This anger also turned out to be the reason behind his thought process on peaceful protest. By turning his emotion into positive actions, he was able to make his opponents look like the aggressors, and in turn it put a bad image on his opponents. However despite all of this, Dr. King had to get rid of that anger somehow, and so he would usually vent to his loved ones, hurting them emotionally. The reason Dr. King was so angry was partly because of the influence his father had on him. When he was a child, he had a first hand experience of what discrimination was like, and whenever things like that happened to his father he would get extremely angry. As he tried more and more for the equality of races, Dr. King grew more and more tense. He became depressed and displaying alcoholic traits, and even lost his temper on a friend, shoving her onto a bed.
However, during interviews with magazine Ebony, he did state that sometimes he did lose his cool with friends and family, and deeply regretted doing so. He even sometimes lost his temper with white officials, and he said that doing so was something he regretted the most, because it made him look like the aggressor, thus putting a bad look on him. In a letter he wrote, "A destructive passion is harnessed by directing that same passion into constructive channels." which I agree with.
