Final Blog- Sharing Economy

The article I read was about a new wave of people who are shifting towards owning less and renting more. One man, Steven T. Johnson, is a part of the sharing economy community and now has so little things that he has been able to get rid of his backpack! I think it is incredible that he is able to live like this with almost nothing being truly his. I’m not sure how other people would take this and if this is something that most of the population would be interested in. I feel that previous generations and ours too can have this idea of “materialism”, that we need more things to be better or happier. I feel like the sharing economy goes against this because in this case, the whole point is to not have to own things. (I honestly think this would be a cool experience to try out). While not many people as of now, will be able to be a part of the sharing community, it is still important for to look at the positive sides to this. First of all, it is much more eco-friendly to share. You have less stuff to take care of and spend less money and time on. Lastly, it is a good way to keep those social skills sharp and learn how to live and share with someone else. I also think it matters where you are located because that could drastically change whether or not being in the sharing economy is right for you. For example, a person living in a big city near work has much more reason to be a part of the sharing economy because not much is really needed when everything is of walking distance. On the other hand, a sharing economy in rural Texas, is less likely to have multiple services just because of the nature of the issue. I think this is great for in the places especially in Houston where there could be a lot of possible This connects back to what we learned about on a sharing economy. I remember how there are so many different ways and things one could do to participate in a sharing economy. Due to the fact that there are so many choices, the sharing economy is a diverse place that I bet could meet almost everybody’s needs. The only issue is getting people comfortable with the sharing and living the minimalist style.
