Civil Rights Blog

Nathaniel Samuels Mr. Roddy IHSS 5/22/19 In the article that I read was from Pew Research Center. They talked about how different groups view racism in America. They covered different aspects of racism from questions like how much does your race define you and your personal identity (it defined nonwhites much more than whites) to how does race affect one's ability to get ahead. I think this topic is very important as in order to make change you need peoples either support or lack of opposition. As long as people deny racism change will be very hard. These studies show that there are many people that even within the same groups disagree on what affects racism and many minorities abilities to get ahead. Along with this it also points out racial divides in racism itself where blacks were more likely to quote entirely different discrimination that they deem important than what whites thought were important. This is interesting as it can change the way we view racism and hopef...

civil rights blog

The LGBT community has already been persecuted for centuries, and it took America year to legalize same sex marriage, but one of the many problems LGBT people are facing is employment discrimination. Sexual orientation and gender identity is still being used as an excuse to fire and employee in 28 states, that said we’ve come far but not far enough since this is a problem. There was an equality act introduced in 2015 that would hopefully fix all of this and yet another just this year on March 13, the bill prohibits discrimination against sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity in public facilities, funding, employment, credit, education, housing, and the jury system. This bill also prohibits a person from being denied access to shared facilities based on that person's sexual orientation, or gender identity. The Equality Act of 2019 will prohibit employers from discriminating against their LGBT employees so the US is getting there.

Blake Peterson Mr. Roddy IHSS 19 May 2019 Border Wall Problems The article I read was about Trump's border wall and how it is going to negatively impact the wildlife and people that live near the border. Other than the wall that Trump wants to build the border already has a ton of security, like drones and sensors, to protect against illegal immigrants and drug trafficking. These methods have started to bother the people living in these areas. A group of 28 organizations have started trying to get Congress to stop funding border surveillance tech. However, this article also has a quote that says Trump doesn’t need to build a wall. He can just increase the technology at the border, which is the opposite of what these people say they want. This kind of makes it seem like the writer of the article, or the groups trying to reduce the surveillance of the border aren't completely on the same page. The wall will also cause problems for local wildlife. It will stop some of t...

Why Every Vote Matters - Nathaniel Samuels

Politics seem to have taken over many conversations recently. Many people are unafraid to use their first amendment right to voice their opinions of recent legislation or simply their distaste with the current office.  That being said there also seems to be a movement towards not voting. Many people are concerned that their vote does not hold that much power, and will simply ignore the polls. If we look a recent elections however we can see how wrong that is. In the NPR article it gives examples of close races, and even ties that were decided by chance. Often in these examples the candidates can recall some of even their friends that just "forgot" to vote on election day. If you exit the article and look at the most recent election in Houston Beto O’Rourke lost to Ted Cruz by a margin of only 2%. This is not the closest of elections talked about it was still very close especially if you consider that only 46.3% of eligible voters actually voted. As low as this is in ...

Final Blog- Luke- It was in draft

Luke Kirchner The Legendary Chili            Over 50 years ago, a chili spill almost caused a riot, at a very unfortunate time. The year was 1967 and integration had begun just a few months earlier. It was at Little Rock High School that the riots and protesting reached an all time high. The government called in the national guard to attempt to block the students from entering, but the president pulled an outstanding move and called in the 101 airborne division to escort the students in. Once the riots died down outside the school, inside the harassment began. The black student's school lives were not good and often distracting. Minnijean Brown Trickey, one of the students, was walking down the school cafeteria isle, when she dropped here chili. The victim of the drop was Dent Gitchel, a junior. She claimed it was "Accidentally on purpose", which is an interesting and kind of makes no sense. She was sus...

Wait, Voting Matters?!

Izabella Curtis Mr. Roddy IHSS 17 May 2019 The FINAL Blog :(           We have all heard it before. "I was busy", "I was at work", even "dude you know voting doesn't matter" WELL IT DOES. There have been COUNTLESS times in election history where the candidate lost due not having the publics vote. It amazes me how people give no shits to voting. I know TONs of people who haven't voted since they were 18. Americans have fought their right to vote for so many years. Women and African Americans fought for this right and people don't take it for granted. You FOR SURE will see me running around in 2020 getting people to vote. I will FINALLY be able to vote. Unfortunately our adolescents are the trouble. If we can get  the younger generation to care about voting then american can really have a chance to make REAL changes.

What is a Recession?

Charlie McGill IHSS Mr. Roddy 5/18/19 What is a Recession? For my final blog for IHSS, I decided to look at the article titled, “What is a Recession?” This article interested me, because even though we went over economics in class, I still didn’t have a great understanding of what a recession really was. It’s a word you hear thrown around a lot these days, due to everyone's fear of the the economy collapsing, so I decided to give it a read. The article defines a recession as when the economy declines significantly over the course of six months, or more. For the economy to drop in such a way, there needs to be a decline in these five economic indicators, real GDP, income, employment, manufacturing, and retail sales. Interestingly, a recession is usually underway when there are several quarters of slowing, but positive growth, followed by a quarter of negative growth. The article lists many ways to predict a recession, one of the best being manufacturing jobs. All forms of manufact...

We're breathing in plastic

Okay, it's not as dangerous as it sounds, it's just tiny little plastic particles, but that still sounds overly intimidating. Microplastics, we hate em, they're dangerous and they suck, that's well known. They're small particles of plastic that are caused through erosion of the plastic into the atmosphere, they're a big enough issue to be called an atmospheric and oceanic pollutant now. When they studied the microplastics in the air they noticed that they were indeed quite small, ranging from 300-40 microns. But those are just the visible ones. Over 50% of the microplastic particles are less than 25 microns wide. There are an estimated 15-51 trillion particles floating on the ocean's surface, that's a lot of particles. If we take the average length of them and stacked them all together like a huge jigsaw puzzle we get 1,462,500,000 square meters of plastic, and that's only using the minimum possible amount of particles, that's almost as much as ...

Final Blog

We Breathe Plastic Scientists found that microplastic can be measured in our air. Even in remote mountainous locations, it is as if plastic was raining from the sky. They even found that higher concentrations of airborne microplastic exist indoors. These pieces of plastic individually are too small for us to see but they can have serious effects on our health. These fine, sharp particles are small enough to enter our lungs and get lodged in lung tissue. This type of exposure has been linked to asthma, heart attacks and memory impairment. While there isn’t technology to detect it yet, scientists warn that nanoplastics are even more prevalent and damaging to our health as they have a different chemical composition. I thought this article was a frightening look at how plastic is affecting us and our ecosystem. The idea that there’s enough plastic in our atmosphere to actively damage your health (even in the most remote locations) is terrifying. http...

Final Blog - Microplastic Pollution

I chose to read the article on National Geographic about how microplastics are raining down from the sky. This article covers how tiny pieces of plastic pollution are raining down from the sky in the Pyrenees Mountains in southern France. Scientists have recorded that a daily rate of 365 microplastic particles per square meter are falling from the sky. What microplastics exactly are is that they are very small pieces of plastic waste and their presence in oceans and waterways has been receiving a great deal of scientific media and attention in the recent years. Researchers have collected microplastics over a five month period at a meteorological station about 4,500 ft above sea level using atmospheric deposition catchers that look like tall funnels. They counted and analyzed the plastic fragments, fibers, and films and counted that more than 50% of the microplastics found were less than 25 microns in size. To put that into perspective, the human hair averages between 50-70 microns in ...

Final IHSS Blog- Rivers That Don't Flow Freely - JM

John Mazziotti May 16th, 2019 IHSS Mr. Roddy Final IHSS Blog Article: https://on.natgeo.com/2VXJO7C 2/3rds of the largest rivers in the world have stopped flowing freely on their own. This only leaves 1/3rd of the rivers in the world unaffected by man or man made structures. The uneven flow of these rivers could easily cause havoc on our economy. These rivers actually help with our ecosystem, human and wildlife depend on free flowing rivers. It helps with our agriculture, giving us sediments that we depend on for our agricultural needs. Another large issue, is that these rivers that have a major impact on whether our cities flood or not. This is because the free flowing rivers take this water to larger bodies of water, and away from our cities.  The problems that artificial dams and hydro power plants cause is immense, and the quantity of them in the world is staggering. Just in the Balkan region of Europe, there are 3,700 hydro power plants. Worldwide, there are just over...

Chili Incident

The article I chose was on the little rock chili incident. This article was related to racism, and how a lunch accident started a riot. First, 9 colored kids went to an all-white school. They were getting tormented every day, but one incident caused a huge fight no one would forget. What happened was Minnijean was carrying her lunch tray full of chili, and someone tripped her, and her chili spilled all over Gitchel. It was a complete accident, but she got suspended for a week. While looking back, Minnijean realized that she would be fine making a mistake if it led to a civil rights movment.

final blog- Currency of the future

Currency is changing, it’s predicted that sometime in the near future businesses will be buying, selling, and trading data as the corporate asset continues to gain value. Companies that aren’t already participating in this data collecting will most likely fall short when it comes to competition in innovation. Without the access to data the company will become disconnected and possibly fail. AI systems also come into play here, seeing that some companies now are using AI to analyze the overwhelmingly large data sets that they are able to access. A business would need to use AI if they really want to be apart of this. According to semi-current research mentions the importance of data to a company such as if a company were to make their data 10% more accessible they could see a $65 million dollar increase. Data is being used as “fuel” to run businesses rather than an output. As of now data can be used to personalize retail, location censors, wearable technology to reduce injury, and eve...

Why Every Vote Matters - Final Blog

Although there have been a lot of cases where elections have been won by a large amount, this article talks about some that have been won due to a matter of just one single vote. This was something I'd never thought about before doing our IHSS section on government; I assumed that most elections nowadays would be won pretty easily due to the amount of people that are involved with each election. To put it into perspective, the article only talks about American election cases and I'm sure there have been a lot of major elections in other countries decided by a small amount of votes. Despite the large amount of people that are involved in these elections, there were still small amounts of votes that won some of these races. For example, the article listed an Alaskan state House race in 2010 in which 10,000 people were involved and was won due to 4 votes. Another group of examples came from Vermont a couple different times: 2010 and 2 elections in 2016. A state House race in 2010 ...

Final Blog

Tyler Holland Mr. Roddy IHSS 16 May 2019 How the World is Actually Improving There are many things that are improving in the world. It is not just increasingly getting closer and closer to an unfixable environment. The main problem that is revolving around this is the amount that everyday people know. surveys show that only 8 percent of U.S. citizens know that poverty has drastically dropped in the last 20 years. This problem around awareness is hard to fix since everywhere you look it is mostly negative news. News on TV mostly advertises negative things and don't really show too much positive news. Between the year 2000 and 2017, global hunger levels have gone down by a lot, in the graph shown in the article you can see how much even large countries like china can improve on the number of hungry people in the country. I think that this article is really important and I think that a lot of people should see it. There are a lot of people who find it hard to find the good si...

Final Blog- Sharing Economy

The article I read was about a new wave of people who are shifting towards owning less and renting more. One man, Steven T. Johnson, is a part of the sharing economy community and now has so little things that he has been able to get rid of his backpack! I think it is incredible that he is able to live like this with almost nothing being truly his. I’m not sure how other people would take this and if this is something that most of the population would be interested in. I feel that previous generations and ours too can have this idea of “materialism”, that we need more things to be better or happier. I feel like the sharing economy goes against this because in this case, the whole point is to not have to own things. (I honestly think this would be a cool experience to try out). While not many people as of now, will be able to be a part of the sharing community, it is still important for to look at the positive sides to this. First of all, it is much more eco-friendly to share. You ha...

Final Blog - China and The World Recycling Issue

Brooks Farish 5/16/19 I chose to read the article on China and the world recycling issue. This article covers the National Sword policy passed in China which made them start to reject all plastics sent to them from all over the world. This policy was passed an a attempt to deal with the environmental issues they face. Now China’s plastic imports have gone down by 99 percent. Before this policy was passed China was handling 95 percent of the recycling plastics from the European Union and 70 percent from the United States. At the time it was a win-win because we had the recycle and China wanted the materials. But now that China has put this policy in place everyone is panicking. This “panic” has to lead to some good changes though. Now everyone is starting to do thing such as put fees into place for using non envoirmentaly friendly materials such as plastic. In the end, China passing this policy has lead to some good changes.     From my perspective, China is a massive entity t...

Final Blog - Britain did not use coal for a week

Andreas Cantu Mr. Roddy IHSS 16 April 2019 No Coal For Britain  In April of 2017 Britain went a whole day without using coal. This was the first time they did this since the industrial revolution, well on May 5th they bested themselves by going a whole week without using coal power of any kind. The UK Government has said in the past they plan on removing coal power from the power grid by 2025, and this week was proof of renewable energies power. This was a good sign because, just a week before  UK's  Committee  on Climate Change recommended that Britain achieve a  net-zero carbon emissions by the year 2050.  The CCC's reported that the goal  could be hit using their current technology, and point to the increasing reliability and decreasing price of renewable energy. There is also a major activist group in Britain that has called for them to reach net zero by the year 2025. In 2015 the World Atlas reported that Britain emits  389.75 mil...

Final Blog: Economics & Politics- Debate Over Wealth in The U.S. and Amazon's NYC HQ

In an article posted by the New York Times from earlier this year, the discussion of how "progressives are starting to favor a new economic agenda" is looked at from both liberal and conservative viewpoints. The article focuses on how many Democrats were against the establishment of a new headquarters for Amazon in New York. The main reason many opposed the building of a corporate headquarters is because of the city's offer to give Amazon around 3 billion dollars if they were to do so. This angered many people and many Democrats in particular because of the notion of how Amazon, which is the top online store in the U.S. that is also worth more than 920 billion dollars, would be receiving a great sum of taxpayer dollars to build the headquarters. Some of the most prominent critics of the HQ were Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Bernie Sanders, and Elizabeth Warren. All of them commented on how we need to stop giving the wealthy and companies like Amazon taxpayer bribes. Senator B...

Final Blog: The Power of Martin Luther King Jr.

Turning Anger Into Peaceful Protesting      In this day and age, we sometimes look back at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, a man who resembles the civil rights movement and peaceful protest. However throughout his lifetime he dealt with incredible anger stemming from racism against African-Americans. This anger also turned out to be the reason behind his thought process on peaceful protest. By turning his emotion into positive actions, he was able to make his opponents look like the aggressors, and in turn it put a bad image on his opponents. However despite all of this, Dr. King had to get rid of that anger somehow, and so he would usually vent to his loved ones, hurting them emotionally. The reason Dr. King was so angry was partly because of the influence his father had on him. When he was a child, he had a first hand experience of what discrimination was like, and whenever things like that happened to his father he would get extremely angry. As he tried more and more ...

Final Blog

I found this article really interesting and enlightening. If there’s anyone we can learn about compassion from it’s definitely Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. It’s interesting because he’s so well known for his pacifism and preaching peace that an angry MLK seems like an oxymoron. While he was a great man, and held strong christian values, I don’t think that it was totally just out of moral code that he was peaceful and had to hide anger. I think a large part was also optics. If MLK had displayed anger or didn’t preach peace, it’s likely he would’ve been heavily demonized since any anger or rudeness a black person might display will get them painted as a ‘thug’ or a violent criminal. It was instrumental to MLK having the influence he did over wider culture that he approached his movement through a peaceful way,and it’s why he’s more remembered than other figures at the time like Malcom X. MLK wouldn’t have been able to sway the centrist whites into helping the cause. The concept of channeling...

final blog

Tyler Block IHSS Mr. Roddy 17 May 2019 The currency of the new age is not money, not bitcoin, but data. Pretty soon, all big companies will be buying and selling data. The more data they can gather, the more profit they can gain. This is because it informs the decisions they make to pick the ones they want and make more money.   This means that people who know how to collect data, people who know how to interpret data, and people who know how to apply the data to make good decisions will be the best future employees. All the requirements for this type of business are resources, data aggregation, data lies, cleaning data, and truth seekers. Resources are important because we have a lack of data scientists. Data aggregation is important because it gives a better and more thorough visual of trends and will help decision making. Data lies are the missing information from the data, it is important because they have to train the scientists to find the missing data in a set and ...

Last Blog - Fully Recyclable Plastics

As much as plastic recycling is advertised, very few kinds are actually recyclable. For example, the most reusable plastic can only be recycled 20-30%. However, now a team of scientists from the Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California are saying that they have discovered a new kind of plastic polymer called polydiketoenamine, or PDK that could make plastic products 100% recyclable. This article really interested me because my challenge project in IHSS focuses on the issue with single-use plastics and their environmental impact. My proposed solution was to simply refrain from using plastic items and instead using alternatives such as cloth bags and paper straws and it definitely did not even cross my mind that a solution could be to redesign the molecular build of plastics to make them more environmentally friendly. I think that if they can make this solution a reality then it would have a significant positive environmental impact. Plastic without a...

civil rights blog: "Education is the Civil Rights issue of Today"

While I was doing research for this blog post I came across an article titled, Education is the Civil Rights Issue of Today. I was interested in the title because of the case we have been studying this past month regarding the children of Little Rock.  The issue, in that case, is whether the schools we will integrate or not and whether those kids should be let into a school. The article focused on how we as a nation still have an extremely difficult time educating our under-served children. "On average, black students are two to three years behind their white peers academically. Almost 70 percent of black fourth graders cannot read at grade level" The article focused on raising the bar for what standard we should be teaching these children because no matter what ethnicity or race you are you should still have an equal opportunity and chance to succeed. I found the work of the organizations mentioned were truly incredible. They are making sure no matter what race you are or wh...

Final blog: 100% recyclable plastics!

I chose to read this article and talk about it for our final blog for two reasons. 1: I did my challenge project on the topic of plastic pollution, and 2: this is an issue that is affecting EVERY SINGLE PERSON ON EARTH. Plastic Pollution is an issue that really needs to be dealt with and we may have a way to fix this issue. There recently was a discovery that showed we may have found a way to fully recycle plastic products, which we have never been able to do in the past. Most plastic products are made in ways that cant be recycled so while you may be tossing it into the green bin, there's a chance it's not making a change. In the article, they discussed being able to break down the product on a molecular level that the material can be reused. "Recovered monomers can be re-manufactured into the same polymer formulation, without loss of performance, as well as other polymer formulations with differentiated properties. The ease with which poly(diketoenamine)s can be manufact...

Final Blog: Language and Gender - Sarah Seeliger

Language and Gender  The article I read was about how the language people speak influences the way they think. This article was raising the question of whether or not people who speak a  highly gendered language would find it hard to make a gender-neutral society. In the article, something called "linguistic relativity" was brought up. Linguistic relativity basically means that your language can influence the way you think about things, specifically gender. The article also talked about how language influences our spatial relationships, like what left and right are. Finally, on to the question: does a highly gendered language make it hard to have a gender - neutral society? According to the article, gender in language is a way to group nouns and pronouns into groups based on the things they have in common. Some languages can have hundreds of classes, but when there are that many classes, they aren't referred to as gender. The word gender is only used when there are t...

Final Blog- Mexico's Raids

Adrian Perez Mr. Roddy IHSS 16 May 19 Final Blog For the final blog, I read the article about the recent raids done on Central American migrants. In the article, it talks about the biggest surprise raid done ever. Hundreds of migrants were traversing across the country, in what has said to been the peak of migrations for migrants. 371 Men, Woman, and Children were captured. Now, the article also talks about Alex Mensing, a member of the nonprofit group called  Pueblo Sin Fronteras. He was the leader of a similar migration last year, but he was not part of this one this year. But with recent deportations, he feared that if he were to make it, he would get sent back. Not only, but also along with the caravans raid in 2014, in 2017, there was also a raid on the freight trains called the “Beast”. “They want to kill us in our country,” a crying woman said as agents and police forced her into a van.  Many of the people got emotional and were very afraid of what was going t...

Final Blog: 100% recyclable plastic

Henry Quillin Mr. Roddy IHSS 14/5/19 $2.5 trillion 'Holy Grail' found? Breakthrough discovery could lead to 100 percent recyclable plastics     One of the most harmful factors that contribute to environmental pollution is plastic. Plastic trash that is in the ocean may have a 2.5 trillion dollars impact on the ecosystem. Plastics are usually not made with consideration of if it can be recycled or not, and many companies are producing cheap plastic that is very harmful to the environment.  Even the plastics that are made to be recycled aren't making much of a difference, because only a small bit of the plastic can be reused and the processing plants use a lot of power and resources.  But there is hope! A study was recently published that showed how researchers from Berkeley Labs found a way to reuse plastics into new materials of any shape, form or color.     This new plastic is called “poly(diketoenamine)”, and is known as PDK. The material can help...

Final Blog: Is There a Connection Between Undocumented Immigrants and Crime?

Despite the fact that the notion that undocumented immigrants cause more crime than others is widely believed and supported, there is actually not any evidence supporting that theory. Recently, new studies have been published on undocumented immigrants and wether or not they are directly related t o the cause of crime. Between 2007 and 2016, regardless of wether or not there was a rush of illegal immigrants entering the country, vio lent crime decreased slightly and similarly across most areas.  Property crime was either entirely unaffected or fell slightly with rising numbers of undocumented immigrants. The only  type  of crime that seemed to have any sort of increase was murder.      There is no exact official number of how many immigrants without documents are living in America right now. Many organizations, including the D.H.S., use a method of estimation called the "residual estimation method" to estimate how many undocumen...

Corpus Christi is Better Than Houston!? At Exporting Crude Oil :)

Texas has always been economically known as an energy provider. We provide millions of barrels of oil to the rest of the world, but now Corpus Christi is expanding their port to make us an even more effective exporter. Houston is infamous for it’s port, but now it may have some competition. Corpus Christi has been hauling in 1,100 foot ships for the past few years but they have come across many difficulties. Many of these ships have difficult times navigating through the narrow channels, and the cargoes can rarely be fully filled. As the cargo ships are loaded with oil, they sink lower and lower due to the weight they gain. Due to the depth of the channel, if the ship gets too heavily loaded, they can’t leave the ports. Soon though, this will no longer be the case. They just got approved for a 327 million dollar project to widen and deepen the channel. This will allow for smoother transport through the ports, as well as increased capacity on ships. This is made even better because ju...

A Man on a Misson

Did you think our IHSS challenge project was difficult? For his "challenge project", Rob Greenfield is on a mission to dedicate a year of his life to solely eating food that he has either foraged or harvested. This massive project required an abundance of preparation including meeting with knowledgeable local farmers, reading various books surrounding flora, attending classes and even watching Youtube videos. Using his bike as a main source of transportation, he is not limited to the boundaries of Florida but instead travels nationwide in search of foods that provide to his restrictive diet. Since he frequently needs to ask owners of properties for permission to take fruit from their trees, he is inspiring individuals to start their own gardens as well. He is proving that food from nature is just as safe as produce from local grocery stores (which is not, in fact, pesticide free). Going from never eating a completely natural meals in a day...

Is There a Connection Between Undocumented Immigrants and Crime?

This article is about how many Americans are complaining that undocumented immigrants are causing a rise in crime, when in fact its quite the opposite. Over the years there have been studies done with many immigrants, but no one has ever thought to study undocumented ones, probably because their so hard to find. Fortunately, they have finally completed a successful study about undocumented immigrants and their connections to crime rates. To me it seemed pretty obvious that undocumented immigrants would rather be peaceful in the USA, which the study proved. They looked at crime rates all over the countries in contrast with places commonly filled with undocumented immigrants. For example, Texas; the study showed that natives were the cause of more crimes than undocumented immigrants. As for many other places, the crime rate over the years has shown little to no change whenever there is an influx of immigrants, undocumented and legal. However, where there is a large population of undocume...

Man Forages for Own Food - Final Blog

In the United States we use 25% of the world's resources despite having only 5% of the population, this effects other places around the world where prices are going up for food we are using, that they used to rely on. Rob Greenfield from Orlando, Florida is trying to bring awareness to this issue by growing or foraging for all of his own food for a year. He travels on bikes around the states seeing what plants grown and where, and figures out what plants grow best in Florida. He has a tiny 100 home he lives in, made out of recycled resources, located in someone's backyard in Orlando. The only problem with foraging for all of your own food is getting the proper amount of protein, and also finding food that has not been affected by pesticides, which are now in almost anything, and especially foraging near the road can have risks. For over 100 days now Greenfield has been able to prepare meals using only his foraged or grown food and has learned more about plants and where they gr...

Final Blog - Man Forages For His Own Food

Perjhing Mardani May 15, 2019 IHSS Mr.Roddy I really enjoyed this article. It is so interesting that this man devoted a year of his life to completely forage all of his own food. I know I could personally never do this. It takes a great amount of determination to do this. This man is honestly fascinating. This article reminds me of when we read guns, germs, and steel. Because in the book, tribes foraged for their food. They also fermented their vegetables, and did many of the things that Rob Greenfield is doing. The methods he is using to preserve these foods are aged back many centuries. I wrote my guns, germs, and steel essay on the evolution of the food industry. So I am familiar with this information. I can imagine how much healthier this lifestyle much be. You eat much cleaner, and know exactly what is going into your body. Rob is an amazing influence. I personally enjoy gardening, and planting flowers and such. He is so inspiring and I would love to start gardening more...

Final Blog: Micro-plastics are raining down from the sky

“It was incredible how much micro-plastic was being deposited,” said  Deonie Allen , a researcher at EcoLab in the School of Agricultural and Life Sciences in Toulouse, France (National Geographic). Allen and his crew of scientists collected micro-plastics over a span of five months. They worked at a meteorological station which was about 4500 feet above sea level. To collect the plastic they used atmospheric deposition catchers (basically really tall funnels). The scientists collected everything they could get; plastic fragments, fibers, and films that were all less than 300 microns in size. To put it into perspective, one piece of human hair is between 50 and 70 microns in diameter. So basically, there is plastic in our oceans, on our land, and in our air.... we are screwed and there is not much we can do about it because there is so much everywhere and we are still making more.  To be honest, I wasn't surprised that we are breathing in plastic. I mean, in one study, re...

Nazi Memes and White Supremacist Dogwhistles

Nazi Memes As mainstream white supremacy has been on the rise in the past couple of years, the internet and meme culture has been instrumental in recruiting new people (typically young middle class, straight, white men) into its ideology. Edgy and dark humor has been weaponized to desensitize young men from the struggles and even humanity of minorities, and give these hateful views plausible deniability through claiming it’s just irony. New memes are also either appropriated or created without overtly stating the meaning behind it, so that only the ‘in’ group can understand it and the general public is left guessing. The main issue is in how this movement has become widespread, no longer on the fringes of society, and more bold, and are more dangerous. No better is these issues exemplified than by the Christchurch Shooter’s manifesto. While this form of internet culture spawns bigotry against the LGBT, women, disabled people, and a numberof other minorities, it is incredibly racist ...
